Hoyne Work Day

We had our first work day of the season and the primary focus was THE GARDEN.View of the garden from the second floor
Before we begin laying seed into the ground, we decided there needs to be a little revamp of the garden’s layout, including a solar-lighted brick path from the sidewalk to the garden and compost area, and new barriers to protect the plants…

It was a full day of back-breaking (and nose bruising… sorry Maria) labor under the chilly Chicago sun. We decided to take a break to go watch Lisa’s indoor soccer championships down the street, but by that time the real work was done. It looks like a completely new backyard and maybe just a little competition for the neighbors…

Plants we plan to grow in our garden:

Tomatoes, Kale, Chard, Lettuce, Beans, Peas…

Herbs: Basil, Cilantro, Parsley, Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary, Mint, Marshmallow
Medicinal Herb Garden (front yard)- Nettles, Comfrey, Lemon balm, Nasturtium, Echinachea

ALSO… Horseradish: Our house’s patron plant, which is growing strong in the corner of the garden. It’s in honor of the house’s previous owners who, early last century, provided horseradish to the neighborhood

Georgie the dogGeorgie, protector of the garden looks on with pride…
